Women jailed for abducting 9-month-old

A 24-year-old woman was sentenced to 15 months in jail for kidnapping a 9-month-old boy in a scheme to win back her ex-boyfriend, a district court announced Thursday.

The defendant, surnamed Yang, had been charged with child abduction for taking the boy from her neighbor's home to pose as her son, according to a press release from Songjiang District People's Court.

Yang had hoped to use the boy to persuade her ex-boyfriend, surnamed Jiang, to marry her. During her trial, she said that Jiang left her last year because of pressure from his family, so she concocted a lie that she was pregnant with his child. Jiang didn't believe her at first, but he eventually heard through friends that she had given birth at the beginning of the year. He contacted Yang and promised to marry her if he was the father.

On July 2, Yang's neighbor and landlord asked Yang to baby-sit her grandson. It remains unclear if Yang had planned to take the boy, but the situation gave her the opportunity to do so. When the grandmother returned, she reported that the boy had been abducted. Police found him in Yang's home in Minhang district the next day.

In court, Yang claimed she didn't have any malicious intent in taking the boy. Although a child abduction charge carries a minimum sentence of five years in prison, the court said it showed leniency because Yang confessed her crime.
