Van, truck collision kills 5, injures 9 in NW China

LANZHOU, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Five people were killed and nine others injured, including eight badly, in a van-truck collision in northwest China's Gansu Province on Monday, local authorities said.

The accident occurred at around 4:40 p.m. when a fully-loaded van carrying 14 people collided head-on with a truck on a highway in the county of Chengxian, sources with the county government said.

The van, which belongs to Tianshui Shengrong Passenger Transport Company, was heading from Longnan City to Chengxian County with 13 tourists and a driver onboard, according to the sources.

The nine injured, all from the van, were sent to local hospitals for treatment. Eight of them were in critical condition, while the other suffered minor injuries, the sources said.

An investigation into the accident is underway.
