NANNING, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- A sudden thunderstorm swept Nanning, capital of south China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, Thursday afternoon, forcing 16 flights bound for a local airport to change course.

Authorities with Nanning Wuxu International Airport said 16 fights that departed from various cities, including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, had to divert to airports in some other cities of Guangxi.

A total of 1,607 departing passengers were stranded at Wuxi International Airport, according to airport authorities.

The weather improved around 9 p.m. and the airport gradually resumed operations.
