Research center built to study food contamination

By Chen Xiaoru (Global Times)

08:22, August 02, 2012

The local food safety watchdog has started construction on a research center to investigate how contaminated or substandard food ends up on residents' tables, a local official told the Global Times Wednesday.

"We have already started building the center, and we hope that it will be completed this year," said Gu Zhenhua, vice director of Shanghai Municipal Food Safety Commission Office.

Although previous media reports said the center would be finished in the first half of 2012, Gu said it is possible that construction will last into the middle of next year.

The purpose of the research center is to study food safety risks in the city by looking into how residents eat, a local newspaper reported Wednesday.

The center will employ experts from Shanghai and around the country, Gu said.

The new center will be charged with constructing a database that includes food safety standards from developed countries and areas that authorities can reference when designing Shanghai's own food safety standards.
