According to foreign media, Hyundai is recalling more than 220,000 Santa Fe SUVs and Sonata cars in North America for problems of their airbag systems.
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in a recent report that the Hyundai distributors in the United States would recall 199,118 Santa Fe SUVs of the 2007, 2008 and 2009 versions, which were produced between April 19, 2006 and July 8, 2008; and recall 22,512 Sonata cars of the 2012 and 2013 version, which were produced between Jan. 24 and June 21 of 2012. The total number of the SUVs and cars recalled is 221,620. Canadian media said that 32,000 of them are in the Canadian market.
The NHTSA said that the occupant classification system (OCS) of the Santa Fe SUV has a problem of being unable to identify a small driver, and therefore, with a small driver, its airbag will not inflate in an accident. The OCS of the Santa Fe SUV will be readjusted.
The curtain airbag of the side supplemental restraint system of the Sonata car has a potential risk of automatic inflation. The storage-style air inflation module of the airbag uses a welded plug. The plug of the problematic Sonata car may break, leading to the release of the stored helium gas and the inflation of the airbag. The Hyundai started to investigate relevant problems in April of 2012 and has found 16 accidents of abnormal airbag inflations. The Hyundai plans to issue recall notices to its customers starting from August.
