Ford recalls Maverick SUVs for uncontrollable driving

(People's Daily Online)

08:21, August 01, 2012

After the new Ford Maverick sport-utility vehicles (SUVs) were recalled for potential risk of its fuel lines catching on fire, Ford declared that it will also recall its older Maverick SUVs for a potential risk in the acceleration unit cable assembly of its cruise control system. In two weeks, Ford has recalled its old and new-version Maverick SUVs three times.

Ford spokeswoman Marcey Zwiebel recently announced to recall 486,000 Mavericks that have a cruise control cable defect. The cruise control cable defect may lead to automatic acceleration of the gas pedal, easily causing traffic accidents. These recalled vehicles were produced between Oct. 22, 1999 and Jan. 23, 2004 and powered by 3-liter V-6 engines with cruise control. The recall affects a total of more than 486,800 vehicles worldwide, including 424,000 vehicles in the United States, 35,000 in Canada, 19,000 in Mexico, 4,500 in Europe and 4,300 in other areas.

The Internet Information Agency had made a communication with some insiders of Ford China about whether the risks existed in the older Mavericks will appear in the imported vehicles to China, and was told that they are also not sure and they are investigating it at present.

Maverick vehicles were recalled three times in two weeks

Maverick SUVs had been recalled for three times within two weeks. The first time was because of defective design of brake pedal and the center console trim panel, which easily led driver's foot to brush the side of the brake pedal when going from the accelerator to the brake. The second time was due to hidden risk of fuel pipes, leading to oil leaking and catching fire. The third time was due to the accelerator cable defect, causing automatic acceleration. All of the problems will cause death when happening on road.

Ford Motor had planned to introduce the 2013 model year Mavericks in the second half of 2012 and put into production in Changan Ford Mazda Automobile Co., Ltd. However, the worldwide recalls had appeared before the new Mavericks entering Chinese market. It certainly will have a negative influence to the new Mavericks in the eyes of Chinese consumers. However, recalling the vehicles in question has also demonstrated Ford's sense of responsibility and the importance attached to the purchasers. We are sure that Ford will bring more vehicles with higher safety performance to China in the future.
