Ford is recalling 486,800 older Maverick models worldwide, according to Bloomberg. The reason is that these vehicles have an automatically accelerating gas pedal, responsible for previous accidents leading to death.
Ford spokeswoman Marcey Zwiebel said that the worldwide recall covers the 2001 to 2004 3-liter V-6 engine Maverick models equipped with cruise control. These vehicles have an accelerator cable defect in the cruise control system. The accelerator cable defect may lead to the gas pedal accelerating automatically.
The recall affects a total of 486,800 vehicles worldwide, including 424,000 vehicles in the United States, 35,000 in Canada, 19,000 in Mexico, 4,500 in Europe and 4,300 in other areas.
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSA) had declared to investigate the Mavericks from the 2001 through 2004 and Tribute SUVs on July 17. The investigation involved 730,000 vehicles.
The investigation is a review of a recall in December 2004. Ford had recalled 470,000 Mavericks from the 2002 through 2004 due to an accelerator cable defect, which may lead accelerator to get out of control. In the same month of 2004, Mazda, the holding company of Ford, also recalled 121,000 Tribute SUVs produced between 2002 and 2004.
Ford had sent dealers to conduct a repair update in December 2005, providing upgraded-version diagrams and warnings to help the recalled owners preventing from accident caused by an accelerator cable defect. In addition, they also installed a new cable for the owners free of charge. However, Mazda Company did not issue a similar notice. Until December 2004, 320,000 Mavericks had been repaired.
In January 2012, 17-year-old Saige Bloom died when a 2002 Maverick crashed in Payson city, Arizona. The Maverick had been repaired in January 2005 but Ford did not carry out the repair update at that time.
