Man shot dead by police for hostage-taking at Beijing subway

BEIJING, July 20 (Xinhua) -- A man was shot dead by police on Thursday night at a subway station in Beijing after he took hostage of a female security inspector at the station and attempted to hurt her with a knife, local authorities said.

The hostage was rescued, local authorities said.

The man took hostage of the inspector at the Hujialou Station of Subway Line 10. The police received the alarm call at 9:07 p.m., according to local authorities.

An investigation into the man's identity is underway.
