Motorcyclist gets four months in detention for driving drunk

A drunk female motorcyclist was sentenced to four months in a detention center and fined 1,000 yuan ($157) for reckless driving and interfering with police, Songjiang District People's Court announced in a news release Wednesday.

The woman, surnamed Zhong, was driving her motorcycle home after dinner on March 15, 2011, when she rear-ended a car at an intersection, according to the court.

Responding officers suspected she had been drinking and tried to give her a blood alcohol test. Zhong did not cooperate. She hit at least one of the officers and broke one of the windows of a police car, according to the court. A later test found that her blood alcohol level exceeded the legal limit.

The court ruled that Zhong had been driving while intoxicated, which constituted reckless driving. It also ruled that her attack constituted interfering with official business.

China recently updated its criminal code last year to include reckless driving following a series of high-profile cases of drunk driving. One can get sentenced to life imprisonment or even death for reckless driving, depending on the severity of the circumstances, said Gao Ming, a lawyer of Shanghai Wanfang Law Firm.
