75 food safety suspects apprehended

Seventy-five suspects allegedly involved in food safety violations have been apprehended from 41 criminal cases cracked by local authorities in the first five months of the year, local food safety authorities said Wednesday.

The watchdog has additionally confiscated items and penalized food safety violators a total of 19.25 million yuan ($3.03 million) over the period, said authorities, who cooperated with the city's public security bureau in the efforts.

Following a series of food scandals in recent years, the city has benefited from countless campaigns to improve food safety, including a dedicated food safety hotline (12331).

The hotline has received 11,539 reports since it was put into operation at the start of the year, which have accounted for slightly more than 75 percent of food safety complaints from the public citywide.

Such initiatives have helped boost the city's average food safety pass rate to 94.06 percent, an increase of 0.57-percent from last year. The improvement was achieved despite 36 people falling sick during the period from two cases of public food poisoning.

With Food Safety Week around the corner next week, authorities said that more plans are in the pipeline to further improve food safety in Shanghai, with the goal of making the city one of the most food-safe in the country by 2015.
