All trapped workers rescued from mine collapse

10:39, May 09, 2012

NANNING, May 8 (Xinhua) -- The last of three workers trapped in a mine was rescued Tuesday, three days after a rain-triggered roof collapse in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.

The accident happened at 11 a.m. on Saturday at an illegal mine in Limu township, Gongcheng county. Three workers were trapped about 25 meters down the shaft, said a spokesman with the county's fire prevention bureau, which also serves as the emergency rescue headquarters.

Two workers were rescued from the mine on Monday morning, and are in stable condition in hospital, the spokesman said.

The mine was excavated by villagers without the local government's authorization, and "it is unclear what minerals it contains," the spokesman said.

Further investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.

Mountainous Gongcheng county, with a population of 282,000, is rich in tantalum, columbium, tungsten, stannum, lead and zinc.
