4 more rescued from Heilongjiang flooded coal mine, 7 still trapped

HARBIN, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers have pulled another four miners out of a flooded colliery in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, with seven others still trapped, rescuers said.

By 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, a total of 14 workers had managed to escape on their own or with help, and rescuers are still searching for the trapped, said an official with the rescue headquarters. Seven were confirmed dead.

Twenty-eight miners were working underground when the accident happened at about 7 a.m., at a shaft of the Junyuan No. 2 Coal Mine located in the city of Hegang.

The coal mine is licensed, according to the Hegang city government.

The cause of the accident is being investigated.
