A man who phoned Pudong International Airport late last week saying a bomb had been planted on a plane has been detained, Shanghai police said yesterday.

The suspect, surnamed Pu, who called the airport on Friday, was seized on Sunday in southwest China's Sichuan Province, police said.

Passengers were taken off flight CA406, which had landed from Nagoya, Japan, and was due to take off again for Sichuan's capital city of Chengdu.

They said they were escorted by police to the terminal building, initially believing that some passengers had taken contraband onboard.

All the passengers had to go through security checks at the terminal.

Police searched the plane but found no trace of the bomb that Pu said had been placed on the flight from Nagoya.

The plane took off later the same night when the alarm was lifted after a delay of around five hours.

Police said that Pu had admitted making the call intending to blackmail the airport into giving him money.

Police didn't disclose the amount of money involved.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, they said.
