Forest fire extinguished in Liaoning

08:43, April 18, 2012

SHENYANG, April 17 (Xinhua) -- A forest fire that broke out on Tuesday in northeast China's Liaoning province, has been extinguished with no reports of injury or death, the local fire control headquarters said.

The fire broke out around 11 a.m. near Qipan Mountain in the city of Shenyang. More than 700 people, firefighters and local residents alike, battled the blaze until it was extinguished around 2:30 p.m., according to the Shenyang forest fire control headquarters.

An initial investigation showed that the fire was caused by the burning of corn stalks on farms bordering the mountain's forested areas, the headquarters said.

A person who is suspected of igniting the fire has been taken into police custody. A further investigation is under way, the headquarters said.

Some firefighters remain at the site of the blaze to ensure that it is not rekindled by strong winds blowing in the area, the headquarters said.
