Zara, H&M, Adidas, Nike, Lining among other famous brands have violated the measures for the prevention of pollution to varying degrees, according to an investigation report on the pollution in the textile industry of China, which was launched by five environmental organizations including Friends of Nature, Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs. Adidas has made a positive response while Zara said they cannot respond to the report.

Textile industry has always been a heavy polluting industry as the companies discharge large amount of pollutants and have low water use efficiency. Many textile firms, including the famous ones, violate the environmental rules, said Ma Jun, director of Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs.

As of Feb. 20, 2012, more than 6,000 environmental violations of textile firms have been recorded in the pollution database of China.

According to the records, some firms discharge unprocessed sewage; some improperly use the wastewater treatment system; some discharge excessive pollutant; some take the liberty to use the seized equipment and others are forced to make rectifications under supervision for outstanding environmental problems.

Many of the problematic firms are the supply chain of well-known international and domestic brands, according to the investigation report.
