POLICE have busted cross-provincial criminal networks that produced gambling machines and ran casinos, with 836 criminal suspects apprehended and illicit funds worth more than 20 million yuan (US$3.18 million) seized.

In the crackdown, police broke up 16 dens that were producing gambling machines, closed 115 gambling venues and confiscated 3,798 gambling machines spanning 18 provincial regions, according to a statement issued yesterday by the Ministry of Public Security.

The gangs operated in the open by claiming to be animation companies headquartered in Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province. They manufactured the gambling machines and sold them across the country, the statement said.

One of the companies, the Guangzhou Beisite Group, had produced the machines since the end of 2007 and ran casinos with annual profits of approximately 100 million yuan, the statement said.
