China shuts down fake police website

09:22, March 28, 2012

BEIJING, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police said in a statement Tuesday they had shut down a fake police service website and arrested four suspects.

The website was named "China Internet supervision and investigation authority" and had the address -- a combination of the Chinese pronunciation of cyber police and the number of the well recognized police hotline.

It pledged to help consumers who had "fallen victim to online fraud" recover their losses, but required them to pay service fees or deposits, according to the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) statement.

Chinese law prohibits police to charge any fee for performing their duty in accepting or investigating cases.

The police said the fake website simulated a real police service portal operated by the Shanghai municipal police bureau.

The four suspects running the website have been charged with criminal offences but are still under investigation, said the statement.
