Beijing will create more language learning opportunities this year to improve the foreign language skills of those in the public services sector. According to its plan, more than 1,000 government officials in the city will attend a 1,368-hour online English course worth 3 million yuan, which will be provided by Beijing Foreign Studies University free of charge.

A relevant official from the Beijing Speaks Foreign Language Office said that the online English course will focus on improving officials’ ability to speak and listen, in addition to teaching them learning methods and improving their writing and reading skills. The course will also improve their cross-cultural communication skills and broaden their international horizon.

Participants in the online course mainly include officials at the member institutions of the Organizing Committee of the Beijing Speaks Foreign Language Campaign as well as those at the member institutions of the Beijing Leading Group for Cleaning up English Signage in Public Places.
