Exodus to overseas universities rises

Applicants for overseas universities continued to rise in Shanghai last year, due to locals' desire for an international education and lower cost brought by the yuan's appreciation.

Nearly 12,500 students from the city headed overseas to study last year, 6 percent more than in 2010. The United States topped the destinations list, according to the Shanghai Education Commission yesterday.

Educational institutes, which provide foreign high school courses, reported rising enrollment, and some public schools opened courses such as the UK's A-Level and Australia's WACE, to meet the rising demand.

More of China's rich seeking better education for their children contribute to the growth, experts said.

"To excellent students, Chinese higher education quality lags behind their overseas counterparts," said Xiong Bingqi, deputy director of 21st Century Education Research Institute.

"To students below the average, an overseas college degree is more helpful for them to land a job in China compared with a domestic third-tier college degree," he said.
