Do you know that your astrological sign might have an impact on your career? Last week, a job opening was posted on Zhongnan University of Economics and Law's Sina Weibo saying that people born under certain sun signs would be considered for positions.
Bizarre recruitment practice
Shortly after the posting appeared on the university's microblog on the afternoon of March 4, the bizarre hiring requirements of Guangzhou Opal Living Company, which manufactures windows and doors, attracted the attention of students and netizens alike. Only Virgos could apply for designing positions, and Pisces would never be recruited as salesmen. However, Taurus, Scorpios and Virgos were all welcome in sales.
The posting was viewed more than 1,600 times by March 6, according to Wuhan Morning Post, stirring heated debate over the requirements, which some call discriminatory.
"It is groundless to say that only Virgos can be good designers or salesmen," said Kong Wenwen, a graduate student at Peking University. "Such discrimination shows that the company is not very open-minded with regard to hiring," she told the Global Times.
However, Jing Ziqiang, a sophomore at Zhongnan University of Economics and Law in Hubei Province, supported the company's stance, saying that astrology is a useful tool in analyzing someone's personality.
"A candidate's sign can be an important reference when a company is hiring, and I will consider applying if there are posts that are suitable for me," he told the Global Times.
