Tibetan nomads settle down in residential communities

15:55, March 01, 2012

XINING, March 1 (Xinhua) -- Nyima Gyaltsen, a Tibetan nomad who lived in tents for decades, managed to settle down in his own Tibetan-style house ahead of the Tibetan New Year.

"I have never dreamed of living in such a nice place. The water and electricity are so convenient. I even can watch television," Nyima, a 70-year-old herder in Yushu prefecture of northwest China's Qinghai province, said Thursday.

Nyima is one of the hundreds of thousands of Tibetan nomads who have benefited from the resettlement program, which builds permanent residential blocks for herders in China's Tibetan-inhabited areas, according to the department of agriculture and animal husbandry in Qinghai.

Zhang Huangyuan, head of the department, said Qinghai's resettlement program has provided permanent houses for more than 200,000 nomads from 64,066 families since it was launched in 2009.

The department worked out the location and lay-out for every resettlement community after extensively consulting with the herders, Zhang said, adding that all of the new communities have easy access to public transportation, as well as water and power supply.

"The program is ongoing. According to our plan, another 50,000 Tibetan nomads will move to their new houses by the end of 2012," Zhang said.
