After the Spring Festival holiday, phone scams have skyrocketed in Beijing, up 170 percent year-on-year since February. Various new scams including insurance dividend rebate appeared.

Insurance dividend rebate fraud emerged at the end of 2011. Swindlers pretend to be insurance company staffs who call beneficiaries to transfer money on the English interface of automatic teller machines by claiming that their insurance dividends fall due.

Besides insurance dividend rebate fraud, other scams involve property tax rebate, car tax rebate, scholarship and state grants, as well as insurance dividends.

After the Spring Festival holiday, online shopping scams soar to account for nearly 40 percent of the total phone scams. And the victims are mainly those who buy used cars, fake diplomas, mobile phone locators and other online goods.
