Man held over expat complex break-ins

Police have detained a man alleged to have burgled foreign households in a high-end community.

Officers said yesterday that the suspect works at a gym and restaurant complex in the community in Minhang District.

Stolen goods worth 40,000 yuan (US$6,351) were found.

Similar burglaries were first reported late last year in the community on Huanzhen Road where many foreigners live.

"One home had two break-ins within a short period," said an officer, surnamed Xu.

Police said as security measures at the complex were good, they believed it was an inside job.

Break-ins began after the club house opened last October, police said.

According to police, one member of staff was observed to have more money than before.

"While he'd often asked fellow workers for cash in the past, he began using a new iPhone 4 and treating colleagues," Xu said.

In the early hours of February 10, police saw a man climb out of the suspect's apartment and break into a home.

The suspect was held by police afterwards and items, including money, a laptop and a games console, returned to their owners.

"I am very happy to get my stuff back," said Cade Abram McBroom, an American tenant who had property worth 23,000 yuan stolen.
