NYALAM, Tibet, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- A pivotal highway linking southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region and Nepal reopened Tuesday afternoon, seven days after being blocked by heavy snow, local authorities said.

Traffic resumed on the 33-km section of the highway connecting Nyalam county and the border town of Zham at around 1 p.m. after local workers and soldiers worked around the clock for five days to clear deep snow on a 20-km part of the section.

It was also the last blizzard-blocked section that had been cleared since the snow storm blanketed some 450 km of the China-Nepal highway on Feb. 7, said Dradul, head of the regional highway bureau.

Nyalam had experienced the largest blizzard since 1989. It had affected 14,122 people, killed 1,573 livestock and destroyed many homes as of Monday evening, according to Dradul.

The recent heavy snow disrupted traffic, power supplies and telecommunication in parts of the region.

Traffic resumed on the 450-km section that connects Nyalam and Shigatse Saturday afternoon.

The China-Nepal highway, built in 1965, is a 829-km route connecting Lhasa, capital of Tibet, and Kathmandu.
