16:36, February 15, 2012

SHIJIAZHUANG, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- Three primary school students were confirmed to have died from a gas poisoning accident in a rented house on Tuesday morning in north China's Hebei province, according to local authorities.

Another seven students received medical treatment in hospital.

At the time of the accident, 10 female students were sleeping in one room of a rented house where coal-burning stoves were used to provide heat, according to the initial investigation.

The house was originally rented by Xing Liqing to take care of his son who studied in the nearby Beiguan Primary School in Nanhe county, Xingtai. But in order to save money, Xing managed to get other students to live in the house.

Xing called police and rushed the poisoned girls to hospital in the morning after he tried to wake them up.

Eight boys living in the other room of the house were not affected.

Xing has been detained by local police.
