SHENYANG - Police shot dead an armed robbery suspect after he opened fire on arresting officers on Saturday evening in Shenyang, capital of Liaoning province, police said on Sunday.

The suspect, Jiang Haitao, a 51-year-old Shenyang native, and an accomplice Wang Liping, also a local, robbed and shot a man, critically wounding him, on Friday morning after the man withdrew money from a bank. They took away about 40,000 yuan ($6,350), according to the provincial public security department.

Police launched a manhunt for the two suspects after the incident and caught Wang on Friday. Wang confessed that he encouraged Jiang to commit robberies.
