XI'AN, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Dense fog has grounded more than 200 flights at an airport in Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi province, since Wednesday morning, airport authorities said.

Thick fog blanketed Xi'an Xianyang International Airport Wednesday morning, reducing visibility to less than 100 meters, the airport's operators said.

Up to 207 flights were delayed or canceled and more than 14,000 passengers were stranded at the airport, they said.

The fog started to clear at 2 p.m., allowing flights to take off, but the airport has warned of further delays due to the big backlog flights.

Many parts of north China experienced heavy mist on Tuesday, in the lead up to Spring Festival which sees huge numbers of Chinese return home.

In Beijing, fog descended on the capital Tuesday night. The municipal weather department issued a warning and forecast it would not clear till Thursday.
