Social problems biggest challenge for Guangdong

08:37, January 18, 2012

GUANGZHOU, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- The biggest challenge faced by south China's Guangdong province is not economic but social problems, the provincial Party chief has said.

Wang Yang, secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, made the statement at the Fifth Session of the 11th Guangdong Provincial People's Congress held from Friday to Tuesday.

"The key to transform economic development structure is ultimately to provide a better life for the people," said Wang.

According to the 2012 provincial Government Report, the GDP of the province increased 10 percent year-on-year to 5.3 trillion yuan (837.9 billion U.S. dollars) last year. Guangdong's GDP for 2011 was the highest out of the country's provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions, which, however, was not mentioned in the report.

"This is a strong signal that gross volume and growth speed is no longer a target for Guangdong," said Zhu Lieyu, a deputy of the provincial People's Congress.

Wang emphasized the importance of resolving social problems after protests had disrupted daily life in the village of Wukan in the province. The protests, which turned violent and triggered public concerns across the country, erupted in September over land use, financing and elections in the village.
