Chinese cabbages make for meaningful matrimony

08:30, January 17, 2012

LINYI, Shandong, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- The members of China's rapidly expanding middle class are spending more money on their weddings in recent years, making them as luxurious and over-the-top as they can in terms of decor and presentation.

However, one 27-year-old man from east China's Shandong province elected to put a more unique spin on his own wedding by purchasing 5,000 kg of Chinese cabbages from needy farmers and giving them away for free.

After exchanging vows with his wife, Wu Xingyu gave the cabbages to his guests, as well as to passersby at the gate of the community where they held the wedding ceremony in mid-December.

"All of the passersby, including taxi drivers and senior citizens, got two cabbages each as long as they gave us good wishes," Wu said.

Wu, who works as a brand planner in the city of Linyi, said he felt sympathetic when he found out that local farmers only get about 0.06 yuan(about 0.01 U.S. dollars) per kg for their cabbages.

"I know the hardships of farmers," Wu said, referring to his childhood spent growing up in the countryside. Wu knew the cabbages would rot in the farmers' fields if they weren't sold, leading him to consider purchasing some of the vegetables himself.

After Wu announced his idea on Sina Weibo, a popular Chinese microblogging site, netizens took the idea and ran with it, introducing Wu to Tian Yukui, a local farmer. Wu bought 5,000 kg of cabbages from him at a price of 0.12 yuan per kg, or twice the wholesale price.
