KUNMING/HEFEI/NANNING, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Sixteen people were killed and 41 others injured after several traffic accidents happened over this weekend in different parts of China, casting a shadow over the Spring Festival, which is a week ahead and traditionally a time for family reunions.

In the southwestern Yunnan Province, seven people were killed after their van fell off a cliff at around 5:40 p.m. Saturday after being hit by another van from the behind in Luquan Yi and Miao autonomous county, said a spokesman with the county's information office.

The victims died on the spot and the van was severely damaged, said the spokesman. Police are still probing how the accident happened.

On the same day, another seven people died after the bus they were aboard crashed with a trailer in the eastern Anhui Province.

The tragedy happened when the light bus collided head-on with the container-trailer in rural Nanling county, said a spokesman with the information office in the city of Wuhu, which administers the county.

The collision also injured five passengers on the bus, among whom three were severely wounded.

On Sunday morning in southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, a van collided with a lorry in Jiangnan District in the regional capital city of Nanning, leaving two passengers aboard the van dead and eight others injured, according to the regional public security department.

Later that day in downtown Nanning, a sedan lost control and injured 28 pedestrians in Xingning District. Police have detained the driver and are investigating the cause of the incident.
