Making sure that disease doesn't ride the railway

SHANGHAI - A program to ensure public health and avoid the spread of disease was launched at the city's railway station last week as chunyun, the annual Spring Festival travel season, arrived.

The program - Health Chunyun, sponsored by Reckitt Benckiser China - is being organized by the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association's Sterilization Branch, the Shanghai Preventive Medical Association and the Shanghai Railway Bureau's disease control and prevention center.

"During the Spring Festival travel peak, the railway department's work is not only to ensure that passengers arrive on time but also that they arrive in good health.

"Ensuring public health has long been an important issue at the railway station, especially during the peak season," said Yuan Xiaoying, an official from the city's railway bureau disease control center.

With large crowds at the station during the holiday, the risk of diseases spreading increases. Thus, it's important to step up disinfection work at the station, she said.

Special teams will be dispatched to disinfect passengers at the station. Also, public-health leaflets and information about avoiding bacteria will be distributed. Posters giving similar messages will be mounted in the station.

Hand-washing is one of the most important methods to effectively prevent the spread of illness. For this reason, about 3,000 bottles of hand sanitizer will be distributed to washrooms in the station for passenger use.

This year, 3.16 billion passenger trips are expected during the 40-day travel season (from Jan 8 to Feb 16), which would be up 9.1 percent from a year earlier, according to the National Development and Reform Commission.
