Yantai (CNS) -- Yang Haiping, 8, is in charge of a small compartment at the Youth and Children's Palace of Yantai in east China's Shandong Province, where he displays his used toys and books for sale.

His highest monthly earnings reached 128 yuan, which he routinely used to buy new toys and give to his peers in relatively poor families, he told CNS on Monday.

The palace has a big shelf of more than 100 cubbyholes like Yang's, each occupied by dolls and hairpins, as well as transformers and peg-tops, and lit up by colorful lights. Prices for the products average about 10 to 30 yuan.

The "shelf for love" project has so far organized three donations, amounting to 17,428 yuan in total, an instructor at the palace said.

Parents are pleased not only that the organizer cleans the shelf regularly, but that the children are learning to cherish and care for others by managing their small "treasures."
