Militants fire rockets at Chinese ships on Mekong

By Wang Qingchu (Shanghai Daily)

14:28, January 06, 2012

Four Chinese cargo ships and one Myanmar's patrol boat were attacked by an unidentified armed group on the Mekong River near a port in Myanmar early Wednesday morning, The People's Daily reported today.

The illegal militia fired two rockets. One missed the target and plunged into the river while the other exploded near the patrol boat, according to the water police of Thailand.

The patrol boat didn't fight back because it was dark, the report said.

The four Chinese cargo ships, including an oil vessel, escaped the rocket fires but the attack sparked a new wave of concerns over the safety of shipping through the Mekong River.

Thirteen Chinese sailors were shot dead on October 5 after two Chinese cargo ships were attacked in the Thai section of the river, which is notorious for drug and arms trafficking and other cross-border crimes.

China, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar set up a joint command of armed police forces to escort commercial shipments along the river in December in an attempt to restore security in the Golden Triangle region.
