GUIYANG - At least 16 people were dead after a tourist bus carrying 56 passengers fell off from a highway bridge in Southwest China's Guizhou province on Wednesday.

Forty people have been rescued and sent to hospitals in Guiding county of Guizhou, where the accident took place, according to officials with the county government.

The bus from the central province of Anhui fell off the bridge and plunged into a 10-meter-deep valley at about 6:40 pm when it traveled on the icy section of an expressway amid heavy snow.

The capacity of the tourist bus is 53 passengers, but there were 56 on board - including three children - when the accident happened.

Among the dead was a child about 4 years old.

Investigation into the cause of the accident is still under way.

It is the second deadly bus accident in China in just two days.

Thirteen people died and 41 others were injured, including nine seriously, on Tuesday when a heavy-duty truck collided with a coach on the mid-section of Shanghai-Kunming expressway in Central China's Hunan province.

The accidents occurred as the annual Chinese New Year travel rush is about to start. About 2.85 billion people are expected to hit the roads during the travel peak from Jan 8 to Feb 16.

The Chinese New Year, the most important family reunion occasion for Chinese, falls on Jan 23 this year.
