China's northernmost county braces for icy Christmas

HARBIN, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- The temperature in a county in China's northernmost tip bordering Russia plummeted to minus 40 degrees Celsius on Friday, prompting authorities to issue an extreme weather warning that is expected to last until Christmas.

An icy fog shrouded Mohe county, or China's "North Pole," in Heilongjiang province early on Friday. Most areas were covered by snow and the few vehicles on the roads had to drive extremely slow and flash their headlights as visibility fell to about 200 meters.

Temperatures began to drop this week before hitting minus 40.4 degrees Celsius early on Friday, said Xu Liling, a local weather forecaster.

The icy weather is expected to continue for at least the next two days, she added.

Close to Russia's Siberia region, Mohe and the heavily forested region surrounding it are known for frigid winters. The lowest temperature -- minus 52.3 degrees Celsius -- was recorded in 1969.
