As microblog is becoming increasingly popular among Chinese government agencies, companies, and public welfare organizations, rumors on microblog has increased more than eightfold from last year, making rumor refutation a necessary supplementary service, according to a report.

The number of microblog accounts in China has hit 320 million, according to the "2011 China Microblog Report" jointly released by Public Relations Research Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Public Opinion Research Laboratory on Dec. 20.

Statistics showed that only 21 rumors was identified and exposed on Sina Weibo in 2010. But as of Dec. 15, 2011, the number of microblog rumors rose to 176 nationwide, and more rumors were spread in the second half of the year.

Rumors about natural and man-made calamities, public figures, and people's livelihood account for 13 percent, 13 percent, and nearly 13 percent of the total respectively. More than 10 percent of the rumors are about the supervision of public power. After the Great East Japan Earthquake and Wenzhou train crash occurred, rumors swept across the country's microblogs.
