China's urban population has exceeded 50 percent of its total population for the first time in 2011, according to the Blue Book of Chinese Society released on Dec. 19.

The book titled "2012 Analysis and Forecast of China's Social Situation" is released by Social Sciences Academic Press and Institute of Sociology, a subordinate to Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

It said industrialization, urbanization and marketization have become "three carriages" that power social change in China.

Li Peilin, a head writer and an researcher with Institute of Sociology, pointed that thanks to the policy guidance and the gradual enhancement of the role played by market in resource allocation, China's urbanization has significantly sped up after the reform and opening up to the outside world.

An investigation also unveiled that nearly 30 percent of those who hold rural household registration now live in urban areas, and China's urbanization has big appeal to agricultural population.
