Pension funds may enter capital market (3)

The Beijing Times reported that since the domestic stock is not mature, authorities can consider investing the social insurance funds in overseas markets, as this would carry smaller risks and bigger potential returns.

Several cases of local officials appropriating social insurance funds have also added to public mistrust of authorities.

In a corruption case in 2006, several officials in Shanghai were investigated for the embezzlement of pension funds worth 3.7 billion yuan, which saw Chen Liangyu, a former local Party chief, sentenced to 18 years in March 2008.
