In order to protect China's lakes, China will establish a lake health monitoring system and carry out regular examinations of all the important lakes of China, said Chen Lei, the minister of water resources.

Affected by climate and environmental changes as well as human activities, China's lake ecosystem is currently facing severe problems, including the deterioration of water quality, sediment accumulation, shrinking wetlands, flood regulation and the weakening of storage capacity as well as aquatic biotic resource recession. China loses 20 natural lakes every year.
