Spring Festival travel planned

(Global Times)

The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has released its plan to deal with the increase in passengers during the upcoming Spring Festival.

According to the plan, the peak period for passenger travel will be from January 8th until February 16. The festival itself falls on January 23. According to the national vacation calendar, the New Year holiday will be from January 1 to 3. Spring Festival will go from January 22 to 28.

The NDRC said around the period of the New Year and Spring Festival, college students, migrant workers and other people far from home will return there. The yearly rush puts great pressure on the country's transportation infrastructure.

According to the NDRC, the estimated number of passengers around Spring Festival in 2012 might reach 3.15 billion, increasing by 9.1 percent from last year. To deal with the heavy workload, more than 25 million people will be hired.

Work safety will be emphasized during Spring Festival travel. Transport equipment not up to code will be forbidden to be used for Spring Festival transportation.

The NDRC also requires the provision of sufficient transport vehicles. In areas where college students and migrant workers are concentrated, special chartered trains, coaches and planes will be encouraged.

In the meantime, passengers are asking for better transport times for passengers.

"I'm used to having trouble buying a ticket," Ni Xiaojing, a university student, said. "I lined-up for the ticket at 6 am last year, and was told they'd already been sold out by the time I got to the front."

She also said some people have certain privileges making it difficult for common people to buy tickets. Ni would like to get back home via the train for the New Year holiday and return as late as possible to escape the peak period.
