Smog disrupts flights at Beijing airport

13:31, December 05, 2011

BEIJING, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- Foggy weather that has lingered since Sunday has led to flight disruptions at one of China's busiest airports.

As of 10 a.m. Monday, 89 inbound and outbound flights were cancelled and 68 flights were delayed for at least one hour at the Beijing Capital International Airport.

An airport publicity official said the inclement weather, which arrived around 5 p.m. Sunday, reduced visibility to as low as 300 meters late Sunday evening.

However, the official said visibility rose to 1.5 km after 9 a.m. Monday, allowing flights to land and take off.

Local meteorological authorities said Monday's weather conditions near the airport will be cloudy with light snow after noon.
