Hong Kong police will implement a sexual crime records registration and look-up system on Dec. 1. Job- seekers can apply for the background check through an automatic telephone inquiry system set up by the police on Nov. 28.
The inquiry mechanism permits employers to demand sex crime background checks from job seekers when they apply for jobs in which they will have regular contact with children or mentally incapacitated persons. This mechanism is aimed at reducing risk of further sexual offenses committed by these people and strengthening protection of the vulnerable.
The police said that this background check is voluntary on behalf of the job-seeker. The employers can telephone the automatic inquiry system, and the system will respond whether the job seekers have sexual crime records, but the crime details will not be revealed to employers.
