Test-tube baby screening a first in city

A WOMAN has given birth to a healthy child after test-tube baby technology that detects chromosome problems was used for the first time in Shanghai.

The technique is aimed at helping women who suffer miscarriages due to chromosome abnormalities and couples fearful of passing on genetic disorders.

A medical center under the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University announced yesterday that a client recently gave birth to a healthy baby using the embryo filtering technique.

The woman, surnamed Wang, had suffered repeated miscarriages blamed on a chromosome abnormality.

The center said she had in the past paid more than 100,000 yuan (US$15,666) in a bid for a successful pregnancy, but attempts had failed.

Finally, Wang opted for the test-tube baby solution.

Following in vitro fertilization, seven candidate embryos were produced, said the facility.

Doctors tested cells collected from each of the embryos to filter out those at risk of inheriting the woman's chromosome abnormality and causing a miscarriage.

The one genetically healthy embryo was placed in Wang's womb. The procedure was a success.

This is the first baby born in Shanghai using this technique. The center is the only one in the city licensed to use this technology.
