More than 20 students were expelled from a middle school in southwestern Guangxi region for using their cell phones at school, Southern Daily reported Sunday.

The incident was first exposed on Tianya BBS by a Chinese user on Nov 17. The netizen reported that his younger sister, Zhang Jiaxin, was a student with Pingnan Experiment Middle School in Guigang city in Guangxi.

"A couple of days ago she was seen playing cell phone in class by teacher who reported it to school leaders before she was expelled," he said.

A man surnamed Guo, one of the school's directors said there are rules to stop children from playing games and visiting pornographic websites.

"We have clear rules that forbid bringing cell phones to school, and students and parents signed an agreement before entering school," Guo said.

According to the school rules, students will be expelled in seven cases. The first case includes bringing a cell phone to school, as well as leaving the campus without permission.
