School bus accident kills 19 in NW China

LANZHOU, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Nineteen people, including 17 preschoolers and two adults, died in a head-on collision between a school bus and a truck in northwest China's Gansu Province Wednesday morning, the local government said.

The accident happened at around 9:40 a.m. in Yulinzi township of Zhengning County, in the city of Qingyang, the provincial work safety bureau said in a press release.

It said four children and the bus driver died at the scene and dozens of others were injured.

The death toll rose to 19 as of 11:50 a.m. and 45 were sent to hospital with injuries, mostly children, said Li Yuanqing, a press official with the county government.

The school bus, run by the township kindergarten, was overloaded, Li said.
