Beijing--More than 10 cars were vandalized overnight inside Dinganli residential community Sunday morning, but the residents said they had not heard any sounds of destruction during the night.

The community is located at the border of Chongwen and Fengtai districts. Residents found the smashed-up cars, mostly mid-range cars like Buick or Mazda, parked along both sides of a road in the neighborhood around 7 am in the morning, and then called police.

"We didn't hear anything that night," said Du Laishun, 56, a retiree who lives on the fourth floor of a building in the neighborhood.

"The cars' alarm systems may not work if the car doors are not ruined, and this could be the reason why the thieves broke into the cars by smashing the windows," he said.

The residents renovated their apartment windows with sound-proof glass this year, which may be why they did not hear the noise, Du said.

One of Du's neighbors, who lost 2,100 yuan ($330.54) from his white Kia, said he went to bed at 4 am but was unaware of anything unusual near his home.
