Death toll from rain-triggered flood in SW China climbs to 19, 16 remain missing

08:32, September 21, 2011

CHENGDU, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Nineteen people are dead and 16 others remain missing after rain-triggered flooding in southwest China's Sichuan Province, according to local authorities.

Rescuers are continuing to search for the 16 missing people.

Torrential rains have been pounding the province since Sept. 16, resulting in 10 billion yuan (1.57 billion U.S. dollars) in direct economic losses, the Sichuan flood control office said.

The floods have destroyed 40,000 houses and prompted the evacuation of 1.39 million people across the province, the office said.

The water level of the Qujiang River has begun to decrease, with water levels at several monitoring stations falling beneath the warning line, the office said.
