A survey demonstrated that about 250,000 people in China died of suicide, which has become the principal cause of death for young Chinese people aged 15 to 34.

This Saturday is the ninth World Suicide Prevention Day, the theme of which is suicide prevention in a multicultural society. According to a survey carried out by the Beijing Huilongguan Hospital and the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) in 2000, China's suicide rate is 22.2/100,000. About 250,000 people died of suicide, and 2 million people attempt to commit suicide every year.

Suicide has become the fifth leading cause of death and constitutes the principal cause of death for young people aged from 15 to 34.

According to analysis, depressive disorder is the principal cause that leads to suicide, which can increase the possibility of suicide by 20 times, while anxiety disorders can raise the risk of committing suicide by six or 10 times and alcohol abuse or alcohol dependence, six times.

People suffering from severe somatic diseases, such as chronic illnesses like cancer, physical defects like deformity and epilepsy or damaged physical function, easily succumb to depression, and they belong to a population with a high risk of committing suicide.

In order to prevent people from perpetrating suicide and encourage people in need to ask professionals for help, Beijing Suicide Research and Prevention Center is conducting out a consultation and publicity campaign in universities, residential communities, enterprises and institutions from today to Sept. 15. College students, women, older adults, teenagers and their parents as well as employees are the main targets for publicity efforts.
