Edited and Translated by Han Shasha, People's Daily Online

Lingering drought in Luzhou of southwestern China's Sichuan province has left more than 1 million people short of drinking water and caused direct economic losses in excess of 1.3 billion yuan.

The summer precipitation in Luzhou decreased by 70 percent compared to the same period last year. The continuous drought has affected 137 towns and more than 2.47 million people, nearly half of the total population in Luzhou, leaving more than 1 million people and 790,000 livestock without drinking water. Further, the drought has also dried 61 dams, affected about 179, 333.3 hectares of crops, of which nearly 37,000 hectares of farmland will have no harvest at all.

Local authorities have initiated a second-level emergency response plan to fight the drought.
