The WHO Health City Cooperation Center was set up in Shanghai on Aug. 29. This is the first cooperation center in the western Pacific region.

Shin Young-soo, Regional Director of the World Health Organization Western Pacific Office, attended the opening ceremony of the new center. She said that Shanghai has a vast amount of experience in building a healthy city, which will provide a model for other countries in the western pacific region to follow. The cooperation center can also help Shanghai to share the experience with others.

Shanghai made an application for the establishment of a WHO center in 2007, and it was officially named the WHO Health City Cooperation Center at the end of 2010.

Li Zhongyang, deputy director of Shanghai Health Promotion Committee and head of the WHO Health City Cooperation Center, said that the center will actively pass the experience of building a healthy city, strengthen cooperation with other countries and conduct various types of research and training to promote the building of healthy cities in China and the western Pacific region.

"A healthy city needs help and guidance from the government. I am glad that the government of Shanghai Municipality has played a good role. Citizens in Shanghai may be proud of living in this city," said Shin Young-soo.
